Berlin Only around 60 percent of long-distance trains are on time, there is a lack of cars and toilets are defective – Deutsche Bahn has been causing great frustration among customers for weeks. Bahn boss Richard Lutz also sees his own shortcomings in an interview with the Handelsblatt and promises customers more reliable operation from the coming year.

However, the sharp increase in energy costs is creating new problems. He leaves it open whether the ticket prices will rise as a result.

Mr. Lutz, when can rail customers expect to reach their destination on time again?
The quality and reliability of the railway is currently unacceptable. This does not meet our requirements and also does not meet the expectations of our customers. That is why we have reacted and, for example, no longer offer transfer times that are too short in the travel chain. We want to provide solid information and avoid frustration.
