Turkey’s high speed wind test tunnel has come to an end!

The project carried out by TÜBİTAK Defense Industry Research and Development Institute (SAGE) has come to an end. With Turkey’s first supersonic High Speed ​​Wind Tunnel Project, our country will stop paying high costs for the tests that need to be done in the aviation industry. In this way, the defense industry and civil aviation industry will be able to achieve development within themselves.

Turkey’s first high speed wind test tunnel

The high-speed wind tunnel developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE is now nearing its end. The pressure cylinders designed and produced by ÇİMTAŞ (Çelik Manufacturing, Assembly and Installation Inc.), which will form the test system, came to the SAGE site. These tubes are domestic products in design and production.

The first wind tunnel established in Turkey was built in Ankara in 1946. However, the tunnel, which could not be completed later, was handed over to SAGE in 1993 and became one of the most prestigious wind tunnels in the world in 2000 and became a SATA member. The test infrastructure of this tunnel, which is one of the symbols of the industrial part of the Republic, also supported many domestic industry organizations. Many domestic products such as airplanes and automobiles were tested in this tunnel.

Ankara Wind Tunnel (ART) is a closed circuit, horizontal loop, atmospheric wind tunnel operating at low subsonic speeds and with a closed test chamber. In the test room, the wind can reach 288 kilometers per hour. The axial turbulence level of the tunnel is 0.15%, and the total turbulence level is 0.62%.

In the new high-speed wind tunnel to be built, the speed of the wind will exceed the speed of sound. In this way, jet planes, rockets, space shuttles, etc. Supersonic vehicles can also be tested. The test tunnel will be ready for use after the assembly of pressure tubes produced by ÇİMTAŞ.
