Dusseldorf Russian Tui major shareholder Alexei Mordashov, who has been on an EU sanctions list since Monday evening because of his proximity to the Kremlin, distances himself from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“What is happening in Ukraine is a tragedy for two brotherly nations. It’s terrible that Ukrainians and Russians are dying, people are suffering and the economy is collapsing,” said a statement from his company on Tuesday night, which Mordashov had forwarded to the Handelsblatt. He sincerely hopes that a way will be found in the near future to resolve this conflict and end the bloodshed.

The 56-year-old Mordashov is not the only Russian billionaire who publicly spoke out against Putin’s Ukraine war. In addition to the Tui investor, Mikhail Fridman from the London investment subsidiary Letter One and the Russian media mogul Yevgeny Lebedev have recently publicly criticized the fighting in Ukraine. Domestically, the pressure on the Russian president is growing.
