This year’s inauguration of President Donald Trump will be held indoors at the Capitol due to extreme cold temperatures, making it one of the chilliest inaugurations recorded. While the traditional outdoor ceremony is canceled, a sports arena will provide a venue for spectators to watch live. Trump, at 78, will become the oldest president to take office, with notable guests including former presidents and tech billionaires. Security measures are heightened with 25,000 personnel deployed in Washington D.C.

The inauguration of U.S. presidents is typically an outdoor affair. However, due to an extreme cold snap affecting various regions of the country, this year’s ceremony will be relocated indoors.

In light of the frigid temperatures, the inauguration of the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump will now occur in the Capitol. Trump has expressed concerns for public safety and has decided that the inaugural address, prayers, and other speeches will take place within the Capitol’s rotunda on Monday.

Traditionally, this ceremonial event unfolds on the west front of the Capitol building, attracting large crowds to the National Mall, the expansive area between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. To ensure public participation, Trump has announced that a sports arena in downtown Washington will be available for spectators to view the inauguration live via broadcast. He also mentioned that the traditional parade will be held there, and he plans to be present after his swearing-in.

Four years ago, Trump did not attend Biden’s inauguration. This time, however, he aims for a different experience.

Extreme Cold in Washington

The capital of the United States, Washington D.C., is currently experiencing subzero temperatures, with conditions on Monday expected to be among the coldest ever recorded for an inauguration. While it is unlikely to be as severe as Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985, which saw temperatures plummet to nearly minus 14 degrees, this year’s event is also expected to be quite chilly.

Forecasts predict temperatures around minus eight degrees for Sunday night, with a maximum of about minus six degrees on Monday. However, the wind chill could make it feel even colder, with some reports indicating a possibility of minus twelve degrees Celsius.

Reagan’s second inauguration also had to be held in the rotunda due to similar weather conditions, marking it as the coldest inauguration on record since 1871. According to the U.S. Constitution, the term of each new president begins at noon on January 20.

In an unusual move, Trump’s team has opted to bypass standard transition protocols, including ethics declarations and FBI background checks.

The Oldest President to Take the Oath

On Monday, Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States. At the age of 78 years and seven months, he will become the oldest individual to assume the presidency. His predecessor, Joe Biden, was five months younger at his inauguration. Following the oath, Trump will present his inaugural address, outlining his vision for the next four years.

All living former presidents—Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton—are expected to attend the inauguration, although former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be present. Outgoing President Biden will also participate, despite Trump’s absence from Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

Germany will be represented at the event by its ambassador and notable politicians from the AfD and CDU parties.

Tech Titans Among the Guests

As part of the guest list, Trump has invited several tech billionaires who will join other celebrities and future cabinet members on stage. Reports indicate that Elon Musk, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Shou Chew from TikTok will be in attendance.

Traditionally, foreign leaders do not attend the inauguration on January 20, yet Trump has extended invitations to right-wing populists, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Argentine President Javier Milei. It remains uncertain if all invitees will accept. Although Xi Jinping of China was invited, Beijing will send Vice President Han Zheng in his place.

For the inauguration, approximately 25,000 security personnel and military members are being deployed throughout the capital. Security fences, standing 2.40 meters high, have already been erected around the White House, the Capitol, and sections of Pennsylvania Avenue.
