Washington The important runoff election in the US state of Georgia broke all donation records: Republicans and Democrats put around 400 million dollars into an election campaign that decides on the distribution of seats in the US Senate.

But the money battle was of no use to the Republicans. They bet on Donald Trump-backed candidate Herschel Walker, an ex-sportsman with no political experience. Walker lost to Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock. The defeat shows once again that the ex-president is rapidly losing power and influence.

Republicans nominating Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination has now become even more unlikely. Even in the congressional elections in November, Trumpists lost across the board. The ex-president alienates moderates and swing voters, who are more important than ever in times of tight majorities.

You shouldn’t write it off completely. Trump is still the Republicans’ biggest fundraiser and the most popular politician at the party’s grassroots level. But support is shrinking, which can be seen from the fact that major donors are turning away.

Potential competitors like Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, or Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador, dare to come out. Both have not yet announced their bids for the presidential candidacy, but their campaigns are prepared.

Trump is no longer without alternatives, that is the lesson of the most recent election season. For the moment, President Joe Biden’s US Democrats are benefiting from this, as the Republicans are in an identity crisis after years of radicalization. This makes them weak and disoriented. But the USA has shown in the past how quickly moods can change.

Republicans could rally behind someone who combines nationalism with strategic acumen. A Trump or Trump imitation may be relatively easy for Democrats to beat, but not a superficially moderate candidate.
