BND boss sees no will for peace in Putin

One year after the beginning of the war of aggression against Ukraine, the Federal Intelligence Service believes that the Russian government is not willing to negotiate. When asked if he saw any will in President Vladimir Putin to make peace, BND President Bruno Kahl said: “Not at all. At the moment it’s all about looking for the decision on the battlefield and realizing as many advantages as possible there – and then maybe dictating a peace on his terms at some point.” Russia attacked the neighboring country on February 24.

Kahl also told the editorial network Germany (RND, Wednesday) that Russia could still send many soldiers to war. In the fall, around 300,000 had already been mobilized and recruited, some of whom were still being trained, but some were already in action. “Russia’s further mobilization potential is a reservoir of up to a million men, if deemed necessary in the Kremlin.”

The defense of Ukraine against the Russians, who outnumber the Russians, is still very effective, said Kahl, whose foreign intelligence service employs around 6,500 people. “But in the long run this is a difficult argument, which will only be successful on the part of the Ukrainians if the support from the West is really very sustainable.” The Russians have now managed to stop surprise successes by the Ukrainians. “It’s now more of a trench warfare, a very cruel, brutal war of attrition,” said Kahl.
