Tokyo stock market hits 13-month low ahead of Fed decision

Tokyo, Frankfurt In anticipation of the interest rate decision by the US Federal Reserve, investors on the Asian stock exchanges hardly dared to come out of their cover on Wednesday. Tokyo’s leading index, the Nikkei, lost 0.4 percent to 27,011 points. In the meantime it had fallen by one percent to its lowest level since December 2020.

The broader Topix index fell 0.3 percent. Bargain hunters pushed the Shanghai stock market up 0.7 percent after posting its biggest one-day drop in eighteen months on Tuesday. “Investors are just waiting for the end of the Fed meeting and how the market will perform after that will depend entirely on the outcome,” said Takatoshi Itoshima, strategist at Pictet Asset Management.
