Thyssenkrupp takes over Wismar site from MV Werften

Berlin The industrial group Thyssenkrupp takes over the site in Wismar from the insolvent MV shipyards. The subsidiary Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) was awarded the contract, the Handelsblatt learned on Thursday from industry circles.

The deal means a strategic turnaround for the group. Until February, CEO Martina Merz was still looking for a buyer for TKMS. With Russia’s attack on Ukraine, however, the board threw the plans overboard. TKMS is now to remain part of the company, with HR Director Oliver Burkhard recently taking over the management. With him at the helm, the division is to be expanded.

TKMS is likely to be one of the beneficiaries of the planned upgrade of the Bundeswehr. The federal government has provided a special fund of 100 billion euros with which new material for the armed forces is to be purchased. Among other things, the construction of new submarines and ships is planned. According to industry circles, TKMS is to be awarded the contract for the new Corvette K130.

TKMS could build these ships in Wismar. According to the company, the location in Kiel will be busy with the production of submarines for years to come. There are now two additional submarines that are intended for the Navy.

Insolvency administrator Christoph Morgen wants to announce the takeover together with TKMS boss Burkhard on Friday in Wismar. The company initially did not comment on this. Until January, MV Werften belonged to the Asian Genting group. The companies in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund built cruise ships for the parent company with more than 2000 employees.
