Berlin It already exists on the LED display of bus line 109, the future of TXL: “Urban Tech Republic” shows it as the final stop. It is located at the foot of the former Tegel Airport, where the last plane took off on November 8, 2020.
There was a lot of controversy about the City Airport. It was popular with Berliners for its easy accessibility and manageability, and it enjoyed cult status with the characteristic 1960s architecture of the main terminal. Some wanted to continue operating TXL after the opening of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) in Schönefeld, others insisted on the closure and the end of aircraft noise for the neighboring residents.
Although the majority of Berliners voted in favor of continuing to operate TXL in a referendum in 2017, the Senate decided to close the airport – and thus the subsequent use of the area.
