“This is the test run for emergencies”

On the second day after the visit of US top politician Nancy Pelosi, the signs are pointing to aggression in Beijing. China is stepping up its punitive measures: the People’s Republic is continuing its largest maneuvers to date in the waters around Taiwan.

At the same time, it imposed sanctions on Pelosi and suspended dialogue with top US military officials. Is China allowing the conflict to escalate further? Military experts warn that if the situation escalates, it could become a crisis far more massive than that surrounding Ukraine.

Military experts from Taiwan and the US have reacted with great concern to the demonstrations of power. Sun Shao-cheng, a former Taiwanese military and now an Asia expert at the renowned US military academy The Citadel in Charleston, recalls the last Taiwan crisis. In 1996, China also tried to intimidate the island state with military threats. “But the current maneuvers are far more aggressive than they were then,” says the military expert.
