Berlin Growth equals prosperity – according to the Greens, this simple formula no longer works. The gross domestic product (GDP) is still the most common standard for measuring prosperity, but it is no longer the measure of all things.
When he took office, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) set himself the goal of re-measuring the prosperity of Germans. In a special chapter on the draft of this year’s annual economic report by the federal government, which is available to the Handelsblatt, Habeck outlines a new approach to measuring prosperity. 34 indicators are intended to show the true state of prosperity in Germany.
“Individual and thus also the welfare of society as a whole depend on much more than just the basic economic data,” says the report. With its policy, the federal government is pursuing the claim of an economic order “that is at the same time ecological, social, just, inclusive, innovative and forward-looking” – a “social-ecological market economy”.
