A new rent index law has been in force nationwide since July 1st. The reform brings changes.

Frankfurt After years of discussions, a new rent index regulation came into force at the beginning of July. The aim of the reform is to increase the quality of rent indexes and thus make them more legally secure.

Because these lists are a crucial basis for many rental disputes. The data collection includes the rental prices of similarly equipped properties in a specific location. It forms a calculation basis to check whether a rent increase is justified or not.

The new regulation provides for clear differences to the previous procedure in individual points. Municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants now have to create a mirror. From the point of view of the German Tenants’ Association, this aspect is “the most important achievement” of the reform.
