This is how the internet should become greener

Hamburg, Dusseldorf Data doesn’t stink. In digitized form, they appear clean, immediately leaving no noise or exhaust fumes when moving from one place to another. But the elegance that emanates from their transmission is deceptive. The worldwide communication networks cause a significant environmental problem due to their energy consumption.

Because data traffic is growing. Strong. This year, YouTube videos, e-mails or digital pieces of music, which alone are transmitted through mobile networks worldwide, are likely to add up to more than 77.5 billion gigabytes. The digitization of some industries has only just begun.

New offerings like Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse are likely to multiply data throughput again. Above all, this costs electricity – and thus emissions. This applies not least to the large data centers whose servers have to be permanently cooled.
