This is how Russia’s offensive in Donbass is currently going

Berlin A year ago, the successful Russian initial offensive in Ukraine began. At the end of March 2022, in that month alone, Kremlin troops had captured around a tenth of the territory in southern and eastern Ukraine – more than 65,000 square kilometers.

A year later, well before the anniversary of the start of the war on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered another major offensive in Donbass. The minimum goal: to capture the Donetsk region. The result up to last week: 85 square kilometers conquered.

The inefficient Russian offensive, centered on the small town of Bakhmut, has long since turned into a battle of attrition. This has been taking place in Bakhmut itself since mid-2022, only Russia has been throwing in even more foot soldiers since February.
