Berlin The President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Arne Schönbohm, is rarely at a loss for a good comparison when it comes to warning of the dangers of the digital underworld.
Cyber attacks are like the corona virus, he says: “The vaccination does not completely protect you from infection, but the course is clearly milder.”
This truth also applies to the digital extortion with ransomware. No German company is safe from the fact that attackers hijack its systems overnight and only want to release it again for a ransom in a crypto currency.
On Thursday, on the occasion of the presentation of the BSI annual report, Schönbohm even declared the “red alert” for some sub-areas of IT security. The industry association Bitkom also warned: “The damage caused by blackmail, connected with the failure of systems or the disruption of operational processes, has increased by 358 percent since 2019.”
