The pandemic demands a lot from employees, in addition to home office and short-time work, above all: overtime. Almost half of all employees in Germany worked more than planned in the pandemic year.

On average, it was 2.9 working hours more per week, as the compensation specialists from Salary.de determined for their current working time monitor. More than 340,000 data records were evaluated for the analysis.

If the overtime is extrapolated over a professional life, employees in Germany accumulate around 6,500 overtime hours, according to the study authors, which corresponds to three and a half years. Most of the overtime is unpaid. The analysis shows that only a third of employees are entitled to overtime compensation.

However, the additional working hours vary depending on the industry. Leaders in the top 10 industries where workers worked the most overtime are Business consultant. They worked almost 4.7 hours overtime per week.
