Berlin When Armin Laschet announced his retirement from the CDU chairmanship, he remained vague. The party leader made it clear that a new start was needed, but did not speak of resigning. He also avoided naming a point in time. Laschet emphasized that he wanted to “moderate” the process. And: He strives for “a consensus of all who come into consideration”.

On Monday, the CDU federal executive board wants to advise on how to proceed after the election debacle. Laschet had announced that it would submit a proposal for an orderly procedure. The latest announcements of resignation make it clear that the time is ripe for restructuring: On Saturday, Defense Minister Annegret-Kramp Karrenbauer and Economics Minister Peter Altmaier surprisingly announced that they would be giving up their Bundestag mandates in favor of two younger colleagues.
