Beijing, Tokyo, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, New York, London, Rome The two of them have learned to think big at Tesla: The Swede Peter Carlsson and the Italian Paolo Cerruti were once managers at the US electrical pioneer – and now want to build the largest battery factory in Europe. Production at Northvolt in Skelleftea is due to start before the end of the year. And not only that: The company, which started in 2017, also wants to develop the most sustainable battery in the world.

Financially strong investors were quickly found, first and foremost the Volkswagen Group, which is the largest single shareholder with around 20 percent. In addition to Goldman Sachs, BMW, an Ikea foundation and the four state pension funds, which started with 323 million euros, wealthy private individuals such as Spotify founder Daniel Ek are also involved.
