Riga Vladimir Putin, the warlord who has lost all good spirits – this picture is painted in public again and again. But is Putin really the man who only listens to himself, who only surrounds himself with vassals? Is he someone who has long been living in his own world – isolated, unworldly, enraptured and megalomaniac? And overlooks the fact that subversive cliques have long been preparing for his downfall?

The Russian political scientist Natalia Stanovaya draws a more differentiated picture than is sometimes circulated in the western media. “The war in Ukraine, history, geopolitics, relations with the US, these are some of the areas in which Putin has a very personal interest,” says Stanovaya, who works in France as a researcher for the US think tank Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is working. “In other areas he delegates.”
