Dusseldorf The path is clear: From 2035, only zero-emission new cars will be registered in Europe. With the end of combustion engines, the job descriptions in the automotive industry will also change massively. A challenge: Fewer people are needed to assemble an electric motor than with classic combustion engines. But new jobs are being created in other areas – software applications and battery chemistry will determine the success of the manufacturers in the future.

Mercedes alone has made around 63,500 employees fit for electromobility since 2020, as the group reports. At Germany’s largest carmaker Volkswagen, 1,200 employees are to be retrained at the main plant in Wolfsburg in the next few months. “The aim is to keep employment through qualification,” says Conny Schönhardt, who is responsible for Volkswagen at IG Metall and a member of the supervisory board.
