Berlin Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to extend the relief due to the sharp rise in energy and, above all, gas prices to all groups. “There will be another package,” said the Chancellor on Thursday at a press conference in Berlin.

The Chancellor also refers to the aid that has been decided. Both recipients of support services and people with low or middle incomes are supported, says the Chancellor. “We will do everything we can to get you through this difficult time.”

Therefore, the planned tax relief package by Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) is correct. “I find that very helpful.” It is also about help for pensioners and students.

Scholz sees no need for a supplementary budget this year. “We assume that we can manage our ideas within the financial framework that is available to us,” said Scholz. He also emphasized that the federal government wants to comply with the debt brake again in the coming year. He has announced additional relief for citizens because of the high energy prices.

The debt brake is enshrined in the Basic Law, but has been suspended in recent years due to the burden of the corona pandemic. Parts of the SPD and the Greens are calling for the debt brake to be suspended again next year in view of the consequences of the Ukraine war and the sharp rise in energy prices.

Scholz: Liquid gas terminals will be ready in winter

Scholz also expects that the gas storage facilities in Germany can continue to be filled. They are already much fuller than last year. In addition, during the energy crisis, consideration is being given to allowing the three nuclear power plants still in operation to run longer. There will be a decision on this “soon”.

According to the Chancellor, the two planned liquid gas terminals on the German North Sea coast will be completed this winter. “The first liquid gas terminals will be connected at the beginning of next year this winter,” says Scholz.

It has been planned for the past few years. “That’s why it will be quick now.” It is currently expensive to procure gas. “But we will always get enough, that’s what it’s all about.” The terminals are considered crucial so that Germany can get by in the winter without gas cuts.

Regarding the Ukraine war, the chancellor assures the country of permanent help in its fight against the Russian attack. Germany has broken with a tradition and is supplying weapons to a war zone, Scholz said at the federal press conference. “We will continue to do so in the near future,” stressed the Chancellor.
