There are better alternatives to gas and nuclear power

Sometimes it is still a bit difficult to imagine a climate-neutral future. Our day-to-day lives wouldn’t function right now if we weren’t constantly burning coal, oil and gas. We would have no cars, no heat and no electricity.

Nevertheless, it is possible and achievable to do without fossil fuels. Scientists, politicians and business associations have worked out exactly how this works in recent years – and found out: The greatest chances for a climate-neutral future exist when as many applications as possible are switched to renewable electricity, which today burns oil and gas .

It is therefore a mistake to label investments in new gas-fired power plants as sustainable, as the EU is now doing with its so-called taxonomy. The European Parliament did not take its chance to correct this mistake. The corresponding legal act will come into force on January 1, 2023.
