The US Supreme Court wants to curtail women’s rights

Women take to the streets against the verdict

new York The Supreme Court, the highest court in the United States, wants to regulate the right to abortion. This will have far-reaching consequences – for women, but also for politics in the USA. The new regulation means that abortions can be completely banned in conservatively governed states. And that definitely goes too far.

So far, the conservatives have had a difficult time on the issue. In the famous “Roe versus Wade” ruling in 1973, the Supreme Court stipulated that the states must generally allow abortion. This requirement is to be dropped in the future. The Supreme Court – at least according to the first public opinion of one of the judges – approaches the issue from a purely legal point of view.

It thus withdraws from the affair to take a position on the content, but de facto strengthens the opponents of abortion. The judge argues that the constitution does not explicitly speak of abortion and is therefore not responsible for it.

Therefore, the states would have to decide on the issue themselves, the Supreme Court should not interfere. Not when states like Alabama and Georgia want to ban abortion altogether. Not even when states like California generously allow abortion up to 26 weeks; in Germany, for example, this is only possible up to the 14th week.

Gift to Conservative Christians

A very narrow interpretation of the US Constitution has increased due to recent appointments of constitutional judges under former US President Donald Trump. It’s a gift to the conservative Christians who got him into the White House.

Trump, who himself is not known as a particularly devout Christian, had appointed three of nine Supreme Court judges, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. They are all known for their conservative views and will continue to drive Supreme Court decisions for years to come.

Nevertheless, the decision to have an abortion in the upcoming midterm elections could help the Democrats. US President Joe Biden, along with other Democrats, called on Tuesday to defend abortion rights, which the majority of Americans support, at the ballot box.

If the Democrats retain control of the Senate, they can legislate to protect abortion rights. But that’s exactly what they should have done a long time ago. And at the same time prevent overly loose rules that opponents of abortion can use as arguments for themselves.
