The traffic light dispenses with a National Security Council

Berlin The negotiations have lasted for months, and now they have finally failed: the traffic light will not set up a National Security Council based on the US model. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) have not been able to reach an agreement on who should be responsible for the committee, the Handelsblatt learned from coalition circles. The “Spiegel” reported about it first.

A newly created National Security Council modeled on the US National Security Council was intended to improve coordination between the chancellery and ministries on security issues.

Many government politicians consider closer communication after Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the new military threat in Eastern Europe to be sensible.

The traffic light coalition therefore considered creating such a body as part of its “National Security Strategy”, which it intends to present this spring.
