Berlin If you take a look at the fleet of the federally owned Autobahn GmbH, you will be surprised: In the future, the company with its almost 10,000 vehicles will not mainly drive models from home, but rather station wagons, Caddies, pick-ups, SUVs and large vans from the French manufacturer Peugeot. Daimler Trucks and MAN were only able to win a tender recently – for 99 trucks.

In the GmbH it is said that errors in the tenders have led to the imbalance in favor of foreign models: instead of giving the award criterion quality a lot of weight, the company has partly advertised solely on the basis of price, possibly also on the basis of delivery times and environmental compatibility. “Beginner’s mistake,” they said. “Of course Peugeot came out of that.”

The anecdote may make you smile, but professionally conducted award procedures are a key skill of a functioning motorway company. Since its founding, however, the GmbH has struggled with a politically ill-prepared and completely hasty centralization of the road construction administration.
