Berlin The SPD, Greens and FDP are striving to form a government quickly. Olaf Scholz (SPD) could be elected Chancellor in the second week of December from December 6th. That said FDP General Secretary Volker Wissing and SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil on Thursday at the beginning of the coalition negotiations in Berlin.
Wissing said that a contract should be presented by the end of November, that the new Federal Chancellor should be elected in the week of December 6th and that the new government should be formed. The previous Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Scholz would then be the successor to Angela Merkel (CDU), who was elected Chancellor in 2005. The SPD had become the strongest party in the federal election at the end of September.
SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil said that the work of the individual working groups would start next Wednesday. These should work out positions by November 10th, which should then go to the main negotiating groups.
Greens Federal Managing Director Michael Kellner spoke of a complex undertaking with a view to the schedule. It will also knot once in the negotiations. But he is sure that the coalition negotiations will succeed. This gives the Greens a chance to be in a federal government for the first time in 16 years and to shape a “new departure”. Wissing spoke of a tight schedule.

Six chief negotiators per party, 22 working groups
At the start of the negotiations, the main negotiators, six high-ranking representatives from each party, met with the heads of the working groups at the Berlin Exhibition Center. A total of 22 working groups with specialist politicians are to negotiate the details of a coalition agreement.
The sticking points in the search for a program for a traffic light coalition are primarily differences in tax and financial policy and the right path to climate protection.
After the 2017 general election, negotiations to form a new government had taken months. After talks between the Union, the Greens and the FDP had failed, a coalition of the Union and the SPD was formed.
