The small cars with electric drive are a long time coming

Dusseldorf New electric cars are expensive. According to an analysis by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM), the average price of the models sold in Germany in 2022 is around 50,000 euros. All too often only large vehicles from premium manufacturers are offered with electric drives. Inexpensive small electric cars in the format and price range of a Volkswagen Polo, on the other hand, are in short supply.

“Electric models are still too expensive on average, still too rare in the lower vehicle segments and still consume too much electricity,” complains Stefan Bratzel, head of the CAM Institute at the Bergisch Gladbach University of Applied Sciences.

Even the always car-friendly ADAC agrees with the university teacher. “We criticize the fact that German manufacturers hardly offer any basic models or inexpensive entry-level variants, and in this respect we see the needs of many private customers in particular as not being met,” says Germany’s largest motorists’ club.
