The refinery in Schwedt faces an uncertain future

Berlin Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) does not look at his cards when the topic comes to the refinery in Schwedt, Brandenburg, and its majority owner Rosneft Germany: One is working intensively to solve the complex problems, one is preparing for all conceivable scenarios , Habeck said this week.

In fact, however, there are already concrete considerations – including an expropriation of Rosneft Germany. The basis for intervention is the Energy Security Act, the amendment of which is currently in the parliamentary process.

Brandenburg Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) is critical of expropriation plans. “An expropriation would probably be possible on the basis of the amended Energy Security Act. But expropriations are complex and subject to great uncertainty,” the minister told the Handelsblatt. “I would prefer other solutions,” he added. Rosneft Germany did not want to comment on the discussion when asked by the Handelsblatt.
