On a small scale, the Ukrainians have already taken the reconstruction into their own hands.

Dusseldorf, Riga Shortly before it was still intact, then suddenly in ruins: In the first weeks of the war, social networks were full of double photos in which Ukrainians documented the extent of the destruction according to the “before and after” principle.

Now, a year after the start of the Russian attack on the neighboring country, the population is getting to work cleaning up the damage, at least on a small scale: houses are being rebuilt, critical infrastructure that has been bombed out is being renewed, railroad tracks are being repaired. But when can the nationwide reconstruction of the country begin? How expensive will it be? And where does it begin now?

The reconstruction of the country will probably take decades. According to estimates by the Kyiv School of Economics and the Ukrainian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the destruction and damage amounted to around 138 billion dollars – and that was only until the end of December last year. Residential buildings and infrastructure accounted for the largest share.
