Berlin, Hamburg While Russia’s troops are marching up on the border with Ukraine and the Kremlin is trying to extort concessions from NATO with threats of war, the German media are making remarkable statements.

“I can mentally understand the Russian threat analysis, even if I don’t share it,” SPD faction leader Rolf Mützenich told the “taz”. NATO’s military spending is “many times higher than that of Russia”. The US alone spends more than ten times as much on its defense budget.

Mützenich’s party friend Kevin Kühnert took the view that potential international conflicts, i.e. a possible attack by Russia on Ukraine, should not be talked about “in order to bury projects in this way that have always been a thorn in one’s side”. So the SPD Secretary General, alluding to the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and to the address of the Green coalition partner.
