Brussels There is movement in the discussion about an EU-wide cap on gas prices – at least on paper. On Tuesday, the EU Commission presented a legislative proposal for the first time, which also includes a number: Gas should not cost more than 275 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) – but only under certain conditions.
The EU Commission was proposing a “gas price cap”, it was read afterwards. But what a majority of EU states have been calling for under this term for months is a completely different mechanism.
What did the EU Commission propose?
The draft law provides that the Commission will have the right to intervene in the market under certain conditions and to ban certain gas transactions. These conditions are:
