Berlin When Detlef Scheele became head of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) in April 2017, Germany was a different country. The biggest challenge was getting hundreds of thousands of refugees into work. Less than 2.6 million people were registered as unemployed, around half the record level from 2005. Only the number of long-term unemployed was like lead at around one million.

When Andrea Nahles, the former Minister of Labor and thus former boss Scheeles, takes over the office of BA CEO on Monday, the world will be a different one. Germany can look back on more than two years of the corona pandemic, which the labor market survived unscathed. But with Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the resulting supply chain problems and price increases, there are risks that are difficult to calculate.
