Frankfurt Thousands of income millionaires live across Germany – but they are not evenly distributed across the country. Recently published data based on tax returns to the tax authorities show which regions have a particularly large number of top earners.

Income millionaires include people or couples who invest together and earn more than one million euros a year. According to data from the tax offices, there were 26,300 millionaires in 2018, more than twice as many as in 2009. More recent data are not yet available because tax returns are often only prepared and checked years later.

In the course of the financial crisis of 2008, their number fell by almost a third to 12,000. Since 2009, the number has risen sharply again. In 2014, at 19,000, it exceeded the pre-crisis level – although inflation was not taken into account. The number of income millionaires per 100,000 inhabitants was now examined. One city-state is still at the top.
