Washington, Atlanta At first glance, Mary is a woman with no worries, her laughter drowning out the booming bass in an Atlanta multipurpose hall. The Black American is proud and heartfelt, her lipstick coordinated with the bright red sequins on her trousers. At a campaign event for the US Democrats, Mary is standing in line for the typical “comfort food” of the South, baked sweet potatoes and fries, the smell of deep fryers wafts over the ranks.
But Mary is scared. “It’s unbearable,” she says, “anything can happen on election night. They are trying to suppress us, they want to sabotage the elections.” By “they” Mary means the US Republicans, on whose party ticket at the important Midterms next Tuesday more than 300 candidates are running who question the democratic foundations of the USA place.
