The massive crash of the auto industry in Russia

“Moskvich” production in Moscow

Berlin The auto industry in Russia is in free fall. In the past year, sales fell by 58.8 percent to 687,370 cars and light commercial vehicles, according to industry experts at the Moscow-based Association of European Businesses (AEB). According to information from car dealers, there is no improvement in sight for the current year either. In 2021, Russia was still the eighth largest car market in the world with sales of 1.7 million new cars.

A large part of the cars sold in Russia are produced in the country itself. The Russian attack on Ukraine and the Western sanctions imposed on it led to the slump.

In the summer months, car production in Russia came to an almost complete standstill, in May it fell by 96.7 percent compared to the same month last year. Many components have to be imported from western suppliers, but can no longer be supplied due to the self-sanctions imposed by the European original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
