Berlin Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) plays it safe: The new Corona regulation that came into force on Sunday provides for a “Christmas and New Year break” for the period from December 24th to January 2nd. Christmas markets, clubs and discos will be closed, strict contact restrictions apply to unvaccinated people, and a maximum of 25 vaccinated and convalescent people may celebrate New Year’s Eve together privately.

The corona virus is proving to be a “very stubborn and changeable opponent” that one has to adapt to again and again, said Weil with a view to the spreading Omicron variant, which has now claimed a first death in Great Britain. That is why the federal and state health ministers want to discuss further steps in the fight against the pandemic this Tuesday. The new Corona Expert Council is also meeting for the first time.
