Vienna Austria is back where it was exactly a year ago. The government has ordered another tough lockdown for the population, this time it should last three weeks and end on December 13th.

Retailers and tourism companies in particular are now betting that this will at least partially save the Christmas business and the winter season. “I hope that at least part of the winter sports season will take place,” said Finance Minister Gernot Blümel from the ruling ÖVP party.

All the measures that Austria had taken almost desperately to counter a new lockdown since the beginning of November did not bring much in the short term: Neither the 3G rule at work nor the exclusion of the unvaccinated from public life through the 2G rule slowed the dynamism of the fourth Pandemic wave. The seven-day incidence climbed to 1045 on Friday, which is a very high value in a Western European comparison.
