Hamburg Since the great city fire in 1842, there has been an office that has shaped the face of Hamburg: the post of building director. The chief urban planner traditionally ensures a uniform appearance of the metropolis – and ensures that the merchant town flourishes.

The current senior building director Franz-Josef Höing, who has been in office since 2017, also sets the tone. “Hamburg’s urban planning is often a model for other cities,” says Sidney Cline-Thomas from real estate consultancy Robert C. Spies. With the help of concept tenders, the city is making it easy for investors to plan. “That is missing in other cities,” he says.

However, Höing meets particularly good prerequisites: Large urban development areas are owned by the city – among other things because they were once part of the port area. In addition, politicians are aiming to dampen the rise in apartment rents by promoting new construction. The Handelsblatt gives an overview of the largest projects in the Elbe metropolis.
