40 Museums in France Hit by Cyber Ransomware Attack: Are the 2024 Paris Olympics in Danger?
According to Le Parisien newspaper, cybercriminals launched a cyber attack on museums’ data systems using ransomware. This software encrypts data and makes information on computers, servers and networks unreadable. Of course, they demand a ransom to return this information. In other words, it’s a complete nightmare scenario.
The cyber attack was discovered by a security expert at the Grand Palais Museum. The Grand Palais will continue to host events such as fencing and martial arts at the Paris Olympics. After the attack Access to Grand Palais servers cut offbut fortunately the museum’s daily operations were not affected. Louvre, Versailles, Orsay and Picasso Museums also had their share of this attack.
The French National Information Systems Security Agency (ANSSI) said this cyber attack could affect the current Olympics and the upcoming Paralympics. It has no effect on the games stated. So, for now, it looks like the games will continue safely. But of course, that doesn’t make the situation any less serious.
Cyber ransomware attacks have once again revealed the importance of cybersecurity. In our own country, the digital infrastructure of museums that protect our cultural heritage must be strengthened to prevent such incidents in the future.
So what do you think? What precautions should be taken to prevent such cyber ransomware attacks? Will the measures France will take against this attack be sufficient? You can share your views with us in the comments section below.
