Dusseldorf In the auto industry, the fight for mass business with electric cars is beginning. On Wednesday evening, Volkswagen presented a model called ID.2 All in Hamburg. The small electric car is scheduled to come onto the market in 2025 as a hatchback and SUV variant with a starting price of less than 25,000 euros. So far, according to figures from the CAR Institute in Duisburg, Germans have paid an average of 42,800 euros for e-cars.

Inexpensive electric cars with an acceptable range at a reasonable price are the next big challenge for the industry. While e-cars have so far been priced more for higher earners, in the next few years they should become as affordable as today’s combustion engines.

VW has now started the fight for this market. “We’re called Volks-Wagen,” brand boss Thomas Schäfer told Handelsblatt. “It is important for us that we round off the offer downwards.” The industry assumes that Tesla will soon follow suit with its Model 2 in this market segment.
