The federal government is about to reach an agreement on the gas price brake – a volume of up to 200 billion euros

Berlin The federal government is about to reach an agreement in its internal negotiations on a gas price brake. According to information from the Handelsblatt from government circles, it should be announced today.

Accordingly, a “low three-digit billion amount” will be made available for the gas price brake. There is talk of 150 to 200 billion euros.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) had been negotiating the design of the gas price brake in the past few days. Above all, the financing caused problems because the finance minister wants to comply with the debt brake in the coming year.

A solution has now been found: the gas price brake is to be financed via the Economic Stabilization Fund (WSF). This was set up during the corona pandemic to help companies. He actually expired in the summer, now he should receive additional funds.
