Frankfurt, Dusseldorf According to Handelsblatt information, the banking supervisors of the European Central Bank (ECB) are taking a closer look at the commitments of European banks to the Signa Holding of the Austrian entrepreneur René Benko. Several people familiar with the matter told the Handelsblatt that the ECB wanted to find out details about loan commitments, such as their exact collateral. The interest is in the Signa Group, not in René Benko’s person.

The query was initiated in 2023, it said. The ECB did not want to comment on the Handelsblatt request. Signa did not respond to a corresponding Handelsblatt request.

The Signa Group is an investment and industrial holding company that is primarily active in the real estate sector, but also in retail. In Germany, the insolvent department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof belongs to Signa.
