Berlin It is becoming increasingly clear that the federal government wants to put the brakes on the immense burdens on gas consumers directly. A gas price cap will probably come. Berlin has convened a commission of experts for the implementation, which met for the first time on Saturday.
But one crucial question remains: What would such a gas price cap cost? Statements by the parliamentary manager of the SPD, Katja Mast, caused a stir in Berlin on Wednesday. “I’m leaving at the end of one three-digit billion amount out,” explained Mast – and that every year.
That would be an immense amount and would drastically increase the trouble that Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) would have in raising the money for a gas price brake. It would be highly questionable how Lindner can still comply with the debt brake at the same time.
But is this number realistic? And if not, how expensive could the lid get otherwise?
