Dusseldorf Ironically in the Christmas business, which is supposed to save the battered retail trade’s annual result, the supply chain between the North Sea ports and the European hinterland threatens to tear. “We can no longer get our containers out of ports like Rotterdam and Hamburg,” complains Oliver Guttmann, importer of picture frames, mirrors and promotional goods for retailers like Aldi. “That is why some articles are no longer delivered punctually and completely for the festival.”

A member survey of the Federal Association of Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics (BME), which is available to the Handelsblatt, comes to the same alarming conclusion. “Many of the purchasing managers surveyed reported ongoing difficulties in procuring urgently needed items from their suppliers for the last three months of the year,” reports the association’s chairwoman, Gundula Ullah.
