The cabinet members of the new federal government

Officially, the SPD, the Greens and the FDP are still making a secret of who will become a minister from among their ranks. The Greens want to announce their cabinet members on Thursday at the start of the membership survey, the SPD only after their party congress on December 4th, so that they can vote on the coalition agreement regardless of name.

But based on the allocation of departments, the occupation of several of the now 17 ministries is unofficially clear. This is what the new federal cabinet could look like:

Olaf Scholz becomes the new Federal Chancellor. The 63-year-old can look back on a long political career. In the 1980s, Scholz was Juso Federal Vice, at the beginning of the 2000s SPD General Secretary, and during the financial crisis of 2008 Federal Minister of Labor.

From 2011 he ruled as the first mayor of Hamburg. Most recently, Scholz was Federal Minister of Finance and Vice Chancellor in the last Merkel government since 2018.

Head of the Chancellery: Wolfgang Schmidt (SPD)

The important role of the head of the Chancellery will almost certainly be assumed by Scholz’s closest confidante, Wolfgang Schmidt. The 51-year-old has been working for Scholz for 20 years, most recently as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance, where he already coordinated the Vice Chancellery.

Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection, Vice Chancellor: Robert Habeck (Greens)

As expected, the new climate super ministry falls to the Greens. Here it is expected that the Greens boss Robert Habeck will take over the department. Habeck would then also be the new Vice Chancellor. However, his co-party leader Annalena Baerbock was also in discussion for the office until the end.

Ministry of Finance: Christian Lindner (FDP)

According to the coalition agreement, the ministry should go to the FDP. This also makes it clear who will take over the influential ministry: Christian Lindner. The FDP boss has always made it clear that in a traffic light coalition, only the finance department is an option.

Federal Foreign Office: Annalena Baerbock (Greens)

After around 20 years, the Foreign Ministry is to be run by a Green again. The most likely variant is that Annalena Baerbock is following in Joschka Fischer’s footsteps.

Ministry of Justice: Marco Buschmann (FDP)

Marco Buschmann could become the new Minister of Justice, close confidante of party leader Lindner and so far parliamentary managing director of the FDP parliamentary group. Until recently, FDP general secretary Volker Wissing was also in discussion for the job.

Ministry of Family: Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens)

The family ministry is occupied by the Greens. The department could be taken over by Katrin Göring-Eckhardt, who is considered a minister by the Greens.

Ministry of Transport: Volker Wissing (FDP)

There is a surprise at the Ministry of Transport. The department does not fall to the Greens, as expected, but to the FDP. The new transport minister could be FDP general secretary Volker Wissing. The department “Digital Infrastructure” is likely to continue to belong to the ministry.

Ministry of Health: Petra Köpping (SPD)

The Ministry of Health is central to the corona crisis. For a long time it was unclear which party would take over the house, now it goes to the SPD. The new Minister of Health is Petra Köpping, previously Minister of Health and Social Affairs in Saxony. The well-known SPD health expert, on the other hand, had hardly any chances Karl Lauterbach granted.

Ministry of Defense: SPD

The Ministry of Defense also goes to the SPD. Lars Klingbeil was long acted for the office, but he is now the SPD party leader. And many in the SPD would like party offices and cabinet posts to be separated. That is why SPD defense expert Siemtje Möller is also traded for the department.

Ministry of the Environment: Steffi Lemke (Greens)

Most recently, Parliamentary Managing Director Steffi Lemke acted for the Ministry of the Environment. But also the Greens parliamentary group leader Anton Hofreiter would theoretically come into question for the office, since the Ministry of Transport does not fall to the Greens, for whom Hofreiter was considered a hot candidate.

Ministry of Education and Research: Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP)

The education department goes to the FDP. It is considered likely that Bettina Stark-Watzinger will take over the department. the 53-year-old is the Hessian FDP state chairman and was part of the ten-person traffic light negotiating team of the FDP.

Ministry of the Interior: Christine Lambrecht (SPD)

The previous Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht actually wanted to end her career. But now she could be about to take the next big step in her career – and become the first Federal Minister of the Interior.

Ministry of Building and Housing: Svenja Schulze (SPD)

The newly created building ministry goes to the SPD. It is likely that the previous Environment Minister Svenja Schulze will take over the department.

Ministry for Economic Cooperation: SPD

The SPD will take over the development aid ministry. Recently traded here included Klara Geywitz, who had unsuccessfully applied for the SPD party chairmanship with Olaf Scholz in 2019, and development aid expert Bärbel Kofler. Until recently, SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich was said to have ambitions for the office.

Ministry of Food and Agriculture: Greens

The Ministry of Agriculture goes to the Greens. Anton Hofreiter could also be considered for the job; as a qualified biologist, the position would be a good fit.

Minister of State for the New Federal States: SPD

In addition to a new design of the ministries, the traffic light also wants to create two new ministerial posts in the Federal Chancellery: In the future, a minister of state should ensure that living conditions of the same standard prevail everywhere in the country. This task could be taken over by Carsten Schneider, who comes from Thuringia and was previously the parliamentary managing director of the SPD parliamentary group. But the SPD politician Klara Geywitz would also be an option for the post.

Minister of State for Migration: SPD

The position of Minister of State for Migration will also be newly created in the Chancellery. This post also goes to the SPD. The cast is not yet known.

Minister of State for Culture and Media: Greens

It was actually expected that the job of State Minister would go to Scholz confidante Carsten Brosda. However, the traffic light negotiators agreed that the Greens would provide the Minister of State for Culture. The cast is not yet known.

More: It will be difficult for Olaf Scholz to keep his election promises. A comment.
