Istanbul The crash of a US drone over the Black Sea shows once again how geostrategically central the waters are for security and trade. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Black Sea itself has become a theater of war. This increases the risks for the global economy, because the inland sea is also important economically because large quantities of important raw materials and products are traded across it.

Large parts of the Ukrainian and Russian grain harvest are transported from there to the world by ship. States such as Egypt and Tunisia get most of their wheat imports from Russia and Ukraine.

In times of war, this works via an agreement negotiated between Moscow and Kiev. This would actually expire at the end of the week. However, Turkey and the United Nations are trying to extend it by 120 days.
