Berlin The President of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Bruno Kahl, could hardly have imagined the end of the year to be worse. After the war in Ukraine had been causing hectic for months, an employee of the foreign secret service was arrested three days before Christmas Eve because he may have been spying for Russia.

Moscow’s services have thus penetrated into the center of the German security apparatus – and thus pose particular challenges for Kahl.

According to the findings of the BND and the investigating Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, the employee suspected of treason passed on internal information to Moscow. According to media reports, this is also explosive material, some of which also comes from Western partner services. The BND does not comment on this.

The damage extends beyond the employee’s betrayal of secrets. It’s about trust in the BND, namely the federal government, the partner services and possible informers all over the world.
