Munich For decades, Europe could count on the powerful ally USA and its nuclear safety net. But in terms of security policy, the Americans are increasingly looking towards the Pacific. If Russia succeeds in its war in Ukraine, other authoritarian countries around the world might feel emboldened, US Vice President Kamala Harris said at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. And it is clear that she also had China in mind.
But the more the Americans concentrate on the People’s Republic, the more the Europeans have to take their destiny into their own hands. This applies not only militarily, but also economically, for example when it comes to reducing dependency on energy or raw materials.
