Berlin Only cash is true, many Germans see it that way. According to a recent study by the Deutsche Bundesbank, euro notes and coins are still the most commonly used means of payment in Germany, even if paying by card or smartphone is slowly increasing.
Last year, 58 percent of all purchases were made in cash, but in 2017 it was 74 percent. “Neither digitization nor the pandemic were able to displace cash,” says Bundesbank board member Johannes Beermann, “when it comes to payments, cash is still by far the most popular in Germany”.
Interior Minister Faeser: No cash payments over 10,000 euros
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser now wants to change that. Not for shopping in the supermarket, but for larger purchases. The SPD politician is in favor of an upper limit of 10,000 euros for cash purchases.
