Many companies were racing to introduce Level 3 autonomous driving technology for the first time. Although Tesla and the FSD system were seen as leading in this process, they could not get the necessary permissions. Mercedes-Benz has crossed an important threshold in autonomous driving through the cameras, GPS and sensors it offers in its vehicles. Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot system, which allows Level 3 autonomous driving, will currently come with the S-Class and EQS models.
Level 3 autonomous driving technology, also known as conditional automation, allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel and their feet off the pedals. While this technology allows the vehicle to move on its own under certain conditions, drivers are expected to be alert and ready to take control at all times.
It is also worth mentioning that the Level 3 autonomous driving system currently creates a gray area in terms of laws and regulations. Most countries do not yet have specific regulations for vehicles with Level 3 autonomous driving technology. Therefore, it remains unclear what the legal responsibilities of the driver and the automaker will be in the event of an accident. Therefore, this project has only been given the green light in the US state of Nevada for now.
